To sit and wait for the terror to hit our own houses is to ask for its' arrival. To do nothing is to let it fester and grow. Band aids don't work on a broken arm. That's the same false dichotomy. Nuke them or wait. I've said nothing that suggests I think we should sit around as an alternative to nuking them. True. You didn't say that. But you didn't say what would work either. It certainly isn't what we have been doing, because that's proven to be such a success! sarcasm What other alternative is there aside from waiting for it to knock on our own doors? Reasoning? Sanctions? Laws? Seriously, what short of nukes might stop them? What we've been doing has been a mix of antiterrorism and sporadic bombing, coupled with a history of supporting tyrants in the region. Long term, my proposed solution is to get entirely out of the affairs of the region, with the exception of supporting Israel. For one thing, if they're busy fighting each other they've less time to fight with us. Involvement in foreign nations has the effect of subsidizing regional defense - we're allowing Saudi Arabia and other nations to sponsor such groups and then sit back without reaping the rewards. Them them reap what they sow - and pay the price. If they want to sponsor a group like ISIS, let them send in the tanks and soldiers to deal with it when they get out of control. If the Shia and Sunni in Iraq want to fight it out, let them. Equally, divert the money used in the pointless military campaign to antiterrorism and intelligence. Open up free trade with the entire region to remove barriers to the spread of our ideals in there - plus, trade tends to reduce conflict between nations. When attacks are carried out, find the perpetrators. Destroy the cells. There are already laws in place that allow European countries to arrest jihadist cells they are monitoring. The problem is, they don't arrest them. A good example is that recent Vice News interview with the jihadists in London. There's enough evidence there to convict those people. But Britain won't. Similarly, there's laws in place to raid mosques and other locations that are suspected of fostering jihad. This all comes under the established laws of violence and threats of violence. So use the laws - arrest these people. |
