It's time to stop asking "Who started this? Who is responsible for this? Who is justified in violence?"
And instead start asking "Who is willing to take part in having a armistice?"
 Quoting: FormerlyBritish

The cause of the violence is pretty clear: the terrorists being ferried over the Russian border to Ukraine by the truckloads. Don't get fooled by putinists who seem to want to distort the issue.

Russia could stop it easily, but it doesn't seem to want to.

The place struck today was a legitimate military target of a terrorist organization fighting a war against Ukraine.

Anyone killed there was likely involved.

A possible narrative if you are a NWO order shill.

A better narrative would be Anti-New World Order freedom fighters killed by New World Order minions. If you are too freakn' dumb to understand, "minions," try evil, f*king, homicidal Mofos.

I put it to you that the issue of the cause is less important than the question of "Who is willing to have a ceasefire and stop the killing?"

And the very very clear answer to that at the UN tonight is - "not Kiev". An armistice is out of the question to Kiev, only victory on one side and surrender on the other side is acceptable to Kiev.

And for that reason the killing will go on and will grow more and more. Because "being in the right on this" is seen as more important than "not getting killed over this". It seems.

And Ukraine will look ever more like Somalia with each passing month until attitudes change.

You see, many people of the east do not recognise the new govt in Kiev, as they had a democratically elected pres, who was ousted in a coup. Yes these people are Ukrainian but they feel that Ukraine should have closer ties to Russia as oppossed to the EU...
 Quoting: firinne

Tou are mistaken. Yanukovych was ousted completely according to Ukrainian constitution by the parliament. He did not have support among Russian speaking population either to continue his presidency by the time he fled country.

Also before the crisis and Kremlin appointed rebel leaders appeared from nowhere (and abolished or liquididated the original elected organs in the eastern cities they occupied) the observers did not see any signs of the "right sector" or any kind of prejudice against Russian speaking population.

The support seems to have been completely manufactured by Russia as is apparent by the nationalities of the dead rebel fighers - most are Russian nationals.

The new presidential election (where extreme right got whopping less that 2 percent of the vote) would have given Ukrainians in the eastern areas possibility to re-elect another president, but the gunmen prohibited voting in the areas they controlled.

According to UN it doesn't look like Ukrainians like the gunmen regime either as people are fleeing towards western Ukraine. And the UN report states human rights violations are much more prevalent in the rebel controlled areas and this was during the "Kiew junta".

This in addition to kidnapping of OSCE observers, torture, robbery and terror.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 58805422

Well I see the whole ousting of Yanokovich as a western backed coup, right from the US spending of over 5 billion politically motivated dollars, right through to the mysterious Maidan snipers...The Whole situ has echoes of Syria and the CIA all over it.

I was in eastern Ukraine a couple of years ago and even then I can remember seeing much evidence of pro Russian sentiment, from witnessing Russian flags hanging on the walls of bars, to the language differences spoken by many, and many of these people despised the nazi elements prevalant in the west. So I dont believe the anti maidan people have been "Russian manufactured".

The recent elections where you say only 2% voted for the nazis dosent really represent a true measure of their support as the Svoboda party recently gained around 11% of the vote, and I would say many of these people voted with their feet recently. Not to mention that turnout was only around 60% even in many western areas.

Yes I will agree that many of the anti maidan forces are from the RF, though I dont believe they represent a majority of those forces, perhaps only a couple of thousand from a force that some estimates give as high as 27 thousand. Though the more civilians that the junta kill will only increase that number as many who have abstained from the violence so far will see no other choice.

If comparing the situ in Ukraine with the situ in Ireland is anything to go by, then all I can say is that no guerrilla army can operate within a civilian population, without substantial support from within that civilian population.

In principle I agree with you. But the thing is, the Kiev government did offer more autonomy for the eastern Ukraine and showed remarkable willingness to negotiate at the beginning of the crisis about two months ago.

Currently the eastern Ukraine is occupied by mostly Russian national fighters who indeed have caused human rights crisis in the area. The horrible situation in the eastern Ukraine has been verified by UN reports, with tell tales of separatist terror, people disappearing and torture.

The recent kidnapping of the OSCE observers - who are there to prevent human rights violations - show that the terrorist leaders don't really want to negotiate or bother with trifles like "international law" and the like.

It used to be $4/post for 9/11 related troll shit, how much did your post net you? If you don't know what the other side is publishing how do you 'counter' it.

The 'truckloads coming from Russia' would be Russian speaking Ukrainian mercs fresh from Syria.

Wouldn't Kiev have to be able to read the enemies mind to know the (expensive) military action is going to last 'at least a full year'?

KIEV, June 2 (RIA Novosti) – A special operation of Ukrainian forces against independence supporters in the country’s southeast could last as long as one year, said Semen Semenchenko, commander of the Donbass battalion, a pro-Kiev militia set up by the Right Sector nationalist movement.

"Unlike many people who believe that the ATO [anti-terrorist operation] will end in just a few weeks, I think that it will take not a month, but, possibly, a year," Semenchenko said quoted by Ukrainskaya Pravda newspaper on Sunday.

I thought only small minority actually wanted unification (or to be annexed by) with Russia. In Crimea the Russian cheating was revealed by Putins own human rights commission, censored nearly immediately after it was published.

Many in the west were fooled by those videos where people were lining up for voting and parades, until it was revealed that the real support was miniscule. That didn't stop Putin from annexing Crimea though.

The "terrorist leaders" as you insist on calling the people in power in the Donbas don't know where these people are. They appear to have been kidnapped (or quite likely killed) by some freelance bandits.

That is totally to be expected if you go wandering into a conflict zone after seeking protection only from the side unable to provide protection. Not big deal, a few lives lost of people who were foolish to go without respecting the people in de facto power. Small fish compared with the number of civilians being killed by the so-called national guard.

Human right crisis? You mean like an army shelling towns full of civilians? Or do you mean Pussy Riot protestors getting arrested for desecrating a church? How about getting legally executed for running a red light? Is that a human right violation?

Russian GDP is roughly equivalent to Italy. I'd say they're fairly vulnerable to financial sanctions.

There is an important difference though.
Russian GDP is on the earnings side of the ledger. Industry, mining, farming.
Italian GDP is just a measure of how much debt you can get into before someone says "no more". Financial services (aka loan sharking).

Well if so then look at Somalia.
Get used to the idea of freelance bandits, random murders, kidnappings and disappearances, lawlessness everywhere, no industry, no farming, no nothing.
Because that is where that form of myopia will take that country.

You should note that Ukraine was fairy united country before the crisis. There's no reason it couldn't be that again. There was no apparent strife in the eastern areas between Russian speaking population and Ukrainian speaking people.

I doubt that the "fascist" -rhetoric that has been going on for a while has any lasting effects. I believe that the eastern Ukrainians mostly wish the gunmen to pack up their things and leave back to Russia. I really doubt western areas have anything against Russian speaking population either - there was no indication of any prejudice of it before the crisis nor should there be after.

I also hope that the eastern areas do get to vote for autonomy or perhaps even independence - but not when kalashikov wielding separatist stands next to the transparent ballot boxes in a fixed election.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, it now dawn in Lugansk.

So everyone expects the border guard battle to resume just about now.
Does anyone have any up to date news?
