I have a question. Not shilling...it's a genuine question.

If the Ukrainians and the Crimeans do and always have considered themselves Russian, why did they want to separate from her in the first place? Was it purely economics or something more?

Just curious and trying to understand.
 Quoting: JazzyG

I think we need to look at who drew the lines when the USSR broke up. Who decided where each country would be and how the hell were they formed because before the soviet union the world looked ALOT different than it does now..
 Quoting: RedEyeJedi

So their separation wasn't by choice? They were just cast off for whatever reason?
 Quoting: JazzyG

I am not sure was just posting my thoughts. I have NO clue where most of those countries came from. And apparently noone else here does either.
 Quoting: RedEyeJedi

Soviet Union - borders did not alter at breakup. Lines were drawn at end of WW2 like all the other ones around Europe etc.

G-7 Leaders Statement on Ukraine

In contrast, Russia has taken no concrete actions in support of the Geneva accord. It has not publicly supported the accord, nor condemned the acts of pro-separatists seeking to destabilize Ukraine, nor called on armed militants to leave peacefully the government buildings they've occupied and put down their arms. Instead, it has continued to escalate tensions by increasingly concerning rhetoric and ongoing threatening military maneuvers on Ukraine's border.

We reiterate our strong condemnation of Russia's illegal attempt to annex Crimea and Sevastopol, which we do not recognize. We will now follow through on the full legal and practical consequences of this illegal annexation, including but not limited to the economic, trade and financial areas.

We have now agreed that we will move swiftly to impose additional sanctions on Russia. Given the urgency of securing the opportunity for a successful and peaceful democratic vote next month in Ukraine's presidential elections, we have committed to act urgently to intensify targeted sanctions and measures to increase the costs of Russia's actions.

Mot Ukrainians do not consider themselves Russian. For the whole of the population of Ukraine including Crimea, according to the Ukrainian Census of 2001 ...

How do you describe your ethnicity?

ethnic Ukrainian - 77.8%
ethnic Russian - 17.3%

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55933088

Thanks. So those who are screaming that Ukrainians have always considered themselves Russian are just spreading more dis-info?

This is all soooo confusing. So much blather and not enough truth.
 Quoting: JazzyG

(oops, didn't post right earlier)

No. Some Ukrainians consider themselves ethnically Russian while some consider themselves ethnically pure Ukrainian even though both live or were born in the territory of Ukraine. It has to do with ethnicity - lineage and heritage - what people you come from. There are certain ideals and beliefs that are passed down from previous generations that influence and form a person's identity. I read an article recently (not sure if I can find it again, but will look) that part of what is happening in Ukraine has to do with the problem of Ukraine's ethnic self identity. And Crimea used to be a part of Russia until Khrushchev gave it to Ukraine as a present in 1954. The East of Ukraine has a mixture of ethnically Russian plus ethnically Ukrainian people and therefore a mixture of both cultures ( and the two get along better) while the West is more ethnically pure Ukrainian. Thus the current divide we are seeing. I think a lot has to do with history of Ukrainian territory, geography, history in general... It is confusing and a lot to research and maybe that is why a lot of people in America don't understand all the underlying factors in this conflict. Yup, PIR is a hardcore Stalinist. Russian's should be pro-Bandera as he fought against the communists. Partial Ukrainian alliance with the Nazi's was out of desperation and Nazi's killed plenty of Ukrainians. Putin bignotes the Soviet victory over Nazi's but remember Stalin was quick to form an alliance with Hitler. Hitler betrayed it. Communists fucked Russia way harder than the Nazi's.

Will it be cyberwar??? Russia and China have very good hacking teams, with lots of cyber experience. China has hacked many new weapon systems directly from US military contractors. Many US military weapons rely on computer chips made in China. Backdoors may have been inserted in those chips to render weapons systems inert or self-destroying at the right time. Financial markets, bank transfer systems, power grids etc. can be hacked and compromised.

Information warfare is ongoing before a conflict, during and after. Efforts are stepped up to disarm certain weapon systems, with the first usually being an air defense system (i.e. Iraq). However, Russia has mobile launchers making a cyber attack more difficult, it not impossible.

Even in this day and age, there is only so much cyber-warfare can do. For example, you cannot hack a jet or navy ship from land, and even if they were on a network, it would not be one accessible using the Internet.

Much of the intel comes from spies and monitoring.

As always. As loud as i may get about my thoughts here, I am truely concerned. People do not seem to realize what it will mean if Russia goes to war. If world war 3 was to kick off... i mean i dare not say it but holy fuck i really do not want to be part of that. Its all cool for me to say i enjoy watching and learning but this is becoming some very sscary shit. I learned about the cold war in school never thinking i would get a taste of the tension myself.
 Quoting: RedEyeJedi

I lived those days. I well remember the times of duck and cover. The tension, the suspicion, the uneasiness.

This is worse.

Well fuck if you are saying this is worse then wow. I am living through major world history but it is something i would rather be watching from afar rather than being invovled in. Unfortunetly i am of perfect fighting age and if things did kick off im sure at some point a rifle would end up in my arms:S

 Quoting: RedEyeJedi
well to be totally frank and this is sound advice,i think you need to be a little more selective when making assertions, not relying upon hearsay and friends .debate is fine its what keeps the fires of glp burning, but fallacious statements or specious information based upon that sounds the part is not conducive to good debate especially in this thread which is more like a series of reports, the info has to be concise, accurate and have legitimacy otherwise the thread will be derailed like i said to my american friend the stats dont lie also treaties are there for all to see theres no hiding.dont take my word for it buddy, read up make sure the material you read has a broad concensus

Here is the article about Ukraine's self-identity that I mentioned. It is pretty spot on and very enlightening towards the current situation. The article is from December 2013

"Images of toppled statues notwithstanding, “revolution” has never been the right word to describe recent events in Kiev. Ukraine, after all, has been here before. At the heart of the country’s present struggle is its resistance to any "strategic partnership" with Russia and its understanding of Europe as a potential economic and political savior from corrupt government. But the tensions between East and West -- both psychological and geographic -- are deeply rooted in Ukraine's national identity. Those Ukrainians most concerned about their country’s future would do well to recognize that identity’s inherent fragility. The original generation of Ukrainian nationalists suffered precisely for their failure to do so..."

China and Russia simplify visa regime

The document was signed during President Xi Jinping in Russia. The new agreement aims to create a more favorable environment for the development of contacts between citizens of the two countries, "- said Itar-Tass Russian Embassy in China.

The agreement also provides for the introduction of visa-free travel for holders of official passports of the two countries for up to 30 days. The document also simplified visa requirements for mutual travels of citizens of different categories.
