The sanctions work. Head of the Russian Sberbank rebels against Putin

And Gref? What about Gref? He was too emotional. His nerves gave out – his business is subject to sanctions.

He made a funny speech. It’s okay. The audience laughed… It looks like there will be no conclusions. [link to euromaidanpress.com]

I don't expect Gref to announce to business world leaders that his president (Putin) is ruining the Russian economy. Sorry, this is a major development-breaking ranks with Putin in public has been a MASSIVE no-no since Vlad took office.

Lukoil Oligarch, along with Rosneft Oligarch have publicly stated sanctions are crippling their businesses. Now add Gref to that list. These 3 men are all very powerful in Russia.

First have to finish ukie banderistan. And then we'll see. It depends on how much trillions you are willing to invest.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 63498038

You do not have to invest.
Just hit all major russian oil and gas fields with weapons that make those fields unmineable.

These would be a good start:
Urengoy gas field
Yamburg gas field
Bovanenkovskoe field
Leningradskoye field
Rusanovskoye field
Zapolyarnoye gas field
Shtokman field
Arctic field
Astrakhanskoye field
West Kamchatka shelf
Medvezhye field
Yurubchen
Kharasoveiskoye field
Orenburgskoe field
Kovykta field
Kyrtael field
Sakhalin-III
Chayandinskoye field
Angaro-Lenskoye field
Central-Astrakhan field

It is most likely that uk/us oil and gas companies are partners in these fields.

That is why these fields are not on fire yet.

At some point however big oil over here won't have any choice.

It is all a matter of time.

It seems to be an unfortunate fact that good wartime leaders often do not make good peacetime leaders. And sometimes vice-versa also.

Gref's time will come again; for now Russia has a trade war to fight and without question many people on all belligerent sides are going to get hurt. It is the same every time you are forced to fight a war.

Western sanctions against Russia cut Europe's throat

[link to english.pravda.ru]

Sanctions against Russia have not led to the isolation of the country, even if the West tried to alienate Russia from western markets of capital and technologies. Instead, the sanctions strengthened the ties between Russia and China. Economic cooperation is not the only area, in which the countries became closer in their relations. It is quite possible that Russia and China may join efforts in the field of international politics to compensate for the feeling of frustration caused by the lack of respect from the West, Czech publication Novinky wrote.

Russia will also be developing partnership with new emerging powers such as India and Brazil, the newspaper said. The agreement on cooperation in the field of strengthening the ruble and the yuan and the wish to weaken the dollar as a reserve currency in the world will complete the picture. For President Putin himself, Western sanctions came as a gift from heaven. Putin's support among the population has reached record levels. He has thus took the unwavering leadership position - the position of the leader, around whom people can unite.

Oil Plunge Magnifies Russia’s Sanctions Pain: Chart of the Day

The U.S. and EU have targeted individuals, companies and the finance, energy and defense industries to punish Vladimir Putin’s government after Russia annexed Crimea and gave support to separatists in eastern Ukraine. While Schlumberger Ltd. and Exxon Mobil Corp. scaled back oil-related operations in September, that didn’t stop Russian production of crude and condensates from rising to near a post-Soviet era record.

“In the short-term, the falling oil price will be a big blow to the economy, especially if it reaches $80 a barrel,” Alexei Kudrin, the finance minister from 2000 to 2011 who helped return Russia’s budget to surplus, said by phone today. “However, in the long run, the sanction will have a more serious impact.”

Ferocious Fighting in Donetsk Inflicts Heavy Civilian Casualties: UK Journalist

MOSCOW, October 7 (RIA Novosti) - Graham Phillips, a freelance journalist, spoke with Radio VR live from Donetsk, where the second battle for Donetsk Airport has been taking place over the last 10 days, saying that the city and the airport have turned into a massive battlefield despite the truce concluded earlier in September, with the full-scale war bringing enormous civilian casualties.

[snip] While violent fighting and clashes are common in the Donetsk area, there are still some relatively quiet places. “The central area of Donetsk is more or less okay, there is not much bombing or shelling on the Lenin square, and the Kievs’ky region is what the Ukrainians are shelling in. We are talking about some horrific things like when a young girl, about 20 years old, lost her leg blown off due to the Ukrainian shelling hit, and her husband’s grandmother, she is crippled. Residential areas being shelled, so it is a lot of danger in Donetsk”, Graham reports, also saying that there is a murky atmosphere in the entire city of Donetsk. “All of the city is under the war environment, and you can feel it”.

Regarding the political implications, Graham notes a lot of excess in the area as reported by the prople he met. There are multiple reports of “fascists” operating in the area, he adds. “After the Maidan situation certain factions sought to be given more power than the President, and these guys are already here, in Donetsk and Ilovaysk and I was speaking to the people that met the infamous Azov battalion, and they say these people come with the swastikas on their helmets, cars, and that these guys are fighting for more, and this more has nothing to do with whatever Poroshenko is making out to be, and what they tell you in Donetsk, this is pure fascism”.

At the same time Graham describes the total chaos in Donetsk. “There is no such thing as Ukrainian forces, they just put together this amalgam of the battalions and the regular army. But you also have to consider that these misguided young men are affected by Maidan and the polemic of being heroes, are being sent to this war, and this war is something the government does not care about, with all these unmarked graves, and the Ukrainians don’t collect their dead because if they do, they will have to pay their families. On the other side, there are guys who think they are fighting whatever is called ‘fascist’ here in Donetsk, while the civilian population is dying, and Kiev denies they exist in the East of Ukraine”, Graham concludes.

As for the possible reasons for the targeted civilian casualties, Graham says that “not particularly because of the strategic importance of the Donetsk airport the Ukrainian forces are shelling the city. They hit two schools, and as a military man you look at the target, at the Google Maps and the question is why don’t they shell the bases of the Novorossiya militia and whatever is marked with their signs, why don’t they target areas occupied by the Novorossiya forces, and why they target residential areas, and they’re targeting places where there a lot of people can be?”, questions the journalist, without providing any decisive answer.

A bad effect that the trade wars have on the whole world is that it makes people, corporations and even nations debt averse. That would be great if there weren't so much debt out there, not to mention even greater potential liabilities associated with derivatives. It may be particularly acute with Russia and Ukraine, but it's pretty much everywhere.

What is happening is that reliable debtors around the world are paying down their debt and resisting further borrowing. And at the same time those who cannot pay down debt are simply defaulting. Or worse, like Ukraine, taking on more debt in the full knowledge and expectation that it will never be repaid and will be defaulted on sooner or later.

On a domestic level some people are even doing both, paying down debts that are immune to bankruptcy (in America the big ones are income tax debts and legal homestead assets) and defaulting on the unsecured debt. Fully half of Americans who have any debts at all have delinquent debts.

The net effect of all of the above is aversion to leveraged investments and depression. Like the 1930s only worse and worldwide (the only notable exception to the Great Depression was Russia, but Russia was growing from a very low base and only recently had the population mostly become literate). Ironic that literacy rates are lower in USA in 2014 than literacy rates in RSFSR in 1955.

As far as I know, it is not banned. Mostly because such a ban is not workable.
But it does damage the thread.
And it does suggest that the person using those terms is boorish, ill informed and that the post is likely to be of poor quality.

So it's in your own interest to refrain and it's in everyone else's interest too. We all get angry at times, but routine abuse and insults are counter-productive.

This should be distinguished from difference of opinion. When I assert, based on all that I have read, that Kiev backed people are launching artillery attacks on residential neighborhood without even aiming at specific target, or specifically targeting schools known it to be the first full day of the school year, I do so sincerely. When other deny that (in spite of all of the evidence) I do not suggest that they are stupid or even that they are wicked in being mistaken. But I do suggest that the perpetrators are wicked people, indeed neo-Nazis many of them.

He is paid, irregularly, for his war reports.

But most of all he is there on the ground in the thick of the action reporting. Just about no other Westerner is there is the action, not with the NAF forces nor with the forces that are fighting them. When we see an ozzie journalist brave enough to go to the front lines (the front lines of either side) there will be more grounds for comparative criticism.

We know why the Western MSM has no-one there. It is because they don't want to be caught telling lies and won't be allowed to tell the truth.

ISIS couldn't have come along at a better time for Russia. Were it not for ISIS and it's regional destabilisation, Brent would be in low 80's ppb. Putin needs to hope that ISIS'sticks around for a while.

Ah, winter has been Russia's great ally since time immemorial. It perhaps goes some way to explain why USA is doing so much to warm the planet.

On the other hand we might just be entering the next ice age but for the industrial revolution (which the world has England to thank for). If "thank" is the right world in a world that is killing itself through overpopulation - but that's for another thread :-)
