Since this article below was posted on 11/8, we had the 6.8 in Jan Mayen and a 6.2 in Tonga.

Earthquake WARNING: Magnitude six tremor ‘to hit in next few days’

Tricky ‘geometry’ involving the Moon’s position will tug on the Earth’s tectonic plates in the coming days and trigger an earthquake, a conspiracy theorist claims.

The Moon is set to align on the side of the Earth facing Venus, the planet in front of us on the way to the sun, and the gravitational pull from both will cause a quake.

No indication of when or where the earthquake will strike, apart from being in the “coming days” but the theorist behind the prediction, website ‘Global Earthquake Forecaster’ Ditrianum, says it could be a magnitude six

'A real issue' - Wellingtonians test walking home from city after an earthquake

Around 125 locals in the Wellington region have spent their Saturday practicing leaving the capital on foot in preparation for a major earthquake.

"We've got State Highway One and State Highway Two, but obviously our geography here means those routes can be quite easily knocked out. It doesn't give us a lot of alternatives other than perhaps some of the smaller streets as you head up through the back part of Wellington"

"This really came about as a result of an earthquake, I think it was from about 2012, 2013. It was a bit of a shake and I thought, 'Well, Wellington's probably stuffed, I wonder how people are going to get home?'"

Mr Laing said the walking event shows people how challenging leaving the city on foot could be following a natural disaster.

National Hurricane Center
@NHC_Atlantic

#Hurricane season isn't over yet! A disturbance east of the Lesser Antilles has a low chance of forming into a tropical or subtropical cyclone over the SW Atlantic Ocean during the middle part of next week.

[link to twitter.com (secure)]

Here’s a reminder that hurricane season isn’t quite over: New storm brewing in Atlantic

The National Hurricane Center has plopped an “X” on the map and a cone that shows a disturbance out in the Atlantic that, if you extrapolate the cone way, way outward, takes it on a path toward Florida.

“Development of this system is not expected during the next couple of days due to unfavorable environmental conditions. However, some subtropical or tropical development is possible around the middle of next week when the system moves near or to the north of the Greater Antilles.”

Also from link:

"It's challenging and I think it does help your awareness and the need to be relatively fit in the event of such an emergency," he said.

Participants walked a distance of 25 kilometres from Wellington Railway Station to Ngatitoa Domain in Porirua today, with many walkers planning to take part in the second event tomorrow, which continues on from Porirua to Kapiti.

One participant ran the event in less than three hours, while the rest of the group, including one firefighter in full uniform, completed the walk in around five hours.

The total distance for the walk is 50 kilometres.

From the fire thread -- I know it's just an optical illusion, but doesn't it look like a gremlin latches onto the power pole, climbs up it and rattles the top of the pole off?
