Predawn Military Rocket Launches Visible from US East Coast Tuesday

Three small rockets carrying a secret project for the U.S. military are scheduled to launch into space before dawn Tuesday (Feb. 24), and late-night skywatchers on the East Coast may be able to see them.

As part of an undisclosed project by the Department of Defense (DoD), three Terrier-Oriole suborbital rockets are scheduled to launch from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, between 12:30 a.m. EST (0530 GMT) and 4:30 a.m. EST (0930 GMT) on Tuesday (Feb. 24). According to a news release from NASA, the rockets will reach altitudes that should make them visible from southern New Jersey down to the north-east corner of North Carolina.

All three rockets are scheduled to launch within a one minute window on Tuesday morning. The DoD will not broadcast the launches or provide specific launch times, according to NASA.

Older article, but interesting.

Using Flash Crowds to Automatically Detect Earthquakes & Impact Before Anyone Else

It is said that our planet has a new nervous system; a digital nervous system comprised of digital veins and intertwined sensors that capture the pulse of our planet in near real-time. Next generation humanitarian technologies seek to leverage this new nervous system to detect and diagnose the impact of disasters within minutes rather than hours. To this end, LastQuake may be one of the most impressive humanitarian technologies that I have recently come across. Spearheaded by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the technology combines “Flashsourcing” with social media monitoring to auto-detect earthquakes before they’re picked up by seismometers or anyone else.

'NASCAR on the Moon': 2 Teams Partner in Private Moon Race

This is definitely a new kind of space race: Two teams competing in a private moon competition have teamed up to get to the lunar surface by the end of next year, potentially sowing the seeds for a sort of lunar NASCAR race.

The new Google Lunar X Prize (GLXP) partnership between the U.S.-based team Astrobotic and the Japanese group Hakuto means that the two teams — and perhaps even additional groups, if they decide to sign on — could duel it out in a "Formula 1 race on the surface of the moon," said Astrobotic CEO John Thornton.

Astrobotic and Hakuto are currently competing against each other, and 16 other teams, in the GLXP, which offers a $20 million grand prize to the first private team to land a robotic spacecraft on the moon, move it 1,640 feet (500 meters) and beam back photos and video to Earth.

Someone said to put some cheese on fried potatoes and sausage. I did that this morning. All I has was Swiss. I don't care about USDA recommendations. As you can all see, I like my fried eggs sloppy and barely cooked.

Recent Japan Earthquakes A Reason For Concern

...What seems to be easy to conclude from this simple map and the associated GEOFON data is that these events are all linked together and likely something quite major. The similarities to the March 2014 Chile swarm are startling, whilst the identification of these events as being directly related to the subduction zone is inescapable.

What remains to be seen is how this develops in the next few days. From the Mw 6.7 Northern Chile earthquake in March 2014 to the Mw 8.1 Iquique earthquake in April 2014, there were 16 days. If things follows suit, a large Japan Trench megathrust earthquake would be anticipated on the 4th March 2015. I am very hesitant to say this large earthquake will even happen - these quakes are, after all, just within the aftershock zone of the March 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku Earthquake. Nevertheless, this is unusual aftershock behaviour four years after a mainshock.
