(Page 2) I put several of my ideas in there also. It is something to think about as winter approaches and we live in crazy times. Better to be prepared and not need it --- than to need it and not have. Here is something else we have done. I buy bulk match books on Amazon to use in the bathroom for the stinky stinks. Several of those match books have been placed in a little sandwich bag, then around it are several cotton balls (pure cotton and not the synthetic) that have petroleum jelly dabs in the middle but not touching the inside of the baggie. This is vacuum sealed together for instant fire making. I also save all used birthday candles and throw them in the vacuum sealed bags as well. It is easier to get a fire going without paper, with one of those little candles. I also use those little candles to rewick those large 3 wick candles that never burn right. I just take a metal pick, heat it up and poke into the wax a hole just a bit bigger than the tiny candle, then place the tiny candle inside and melt wax down the hole to keep in place. We no longer use vegetable shortening as it is really bad for us, instead we use lard and bacon grease. Back to the way our ancestors lived 1,000's of years. I still have 3-4 containers of Crisco. Instead of throwing out, when the time comes, they will be used as candles or a sterno type heat source. Never tried it but it is said the Crisco candle will burn for 10-20 hours. When you buy tuna, get it in oil. In the time of need, save the drained oil and the can. Viola, another candle type container in the can it came with. Quoting: WhiteAngel Really good ideas, WA! In fact, if my day hadn't taken such an unexpected direction, I had intended to make some firestarters using inexpensive make-up remover pads from the dollar store, jute twine and old melted candles. Maybe tomorrow. And I have pinecones to dip in wax with jute string for a wick. Lots of projects, and life just keeps getting in the way! Thanks for the post WA! I'll check out the thread... Quoting: justanothergranny With as little on that thread, I might make one tomorrow and get it pinned. It is important that we all know how to stay warm when it is cold and even cool when it is hot. How ingenious. Heard of but never did. We have a few bag fulls that we gathered for a pine cone wreath but never made it. Now I know a better use. I know they make great kindling for starting a fire, though they can be pretty poppie if fresh lol |

There used to be some powder you could add to the wax to make the flames turn colors, but I haven't seen the ads in years. I don't think it worked too well. We never tried that and I don't remember what was in the powder, either. Just that my parents vetoed it! LOL |

Quoting: WhiteAngel Take jute twine or candle wick and run it from the bottom of the pine cone twisted around the spikes and up and out around the top. Hold it by the twine & dip into melted wax several times, letting it cool & harden between each dip. The wax will hold the twine in place. When ready to use, just light the twine or candle wick. It will usually burn for 20 -30 minutes, long enough to light a good fire. It also puts out a lot of heat by itself. Nef and I cleared the drains at the end of our street ahead of the remnants of Ida. We noticed others doing the same as we were driving earlier today. I also noticed some sand bagging along the main road into the town that I work in recently. There's a river along the road. In all of the years that I have driven that route, I have NEVER seen that. Ever. I guess serious flooding is expected. We're under a flash flood watch.
