And starting Monday our company is having a major hospital chain doing our wuhu virus screening on a daily basis and in about 2 weeks testing for everyone.

On a daily basis for every single employee?? What type of screening? Is it just temp check and asking the standard questions, or is it more than that?

Yeah I'm just wondering what type of screening. I went to pick up a prescription for my elderly neighbor and they took my temp before entering the building and asked me a series of questions. I am curious if RGs company is doing something like that, or something more involved. I assume it's not a swab up the nose every day!

I think it is just general screening to start, questions and temp. Temperature checks are pretty much useless, they should also be doing oximeter tests and said so.

I'm lucky in that I don't have anyone in my 4 rooms, I work alone in a large company, have a private bathroom, a door and exhaust fans in most of the rooms. I keep the door open with the exhaust fans running. The big problem I see with companies reopening is going to be the closed air circulation, cases are going to spike when air conditioning are running all day.

Hopefully, when the actual testing starts we will be getting the rapid test with just saliva. Would only seem right since we make the components for it.

Yeah, that's our concern. Our office is fairly small and a few people even share an office and sometimes we unavoidably have clients coming in/out so that's why I say if we go back anytime soon, we'll have to work alternate days to try and keep the people to a minimum. That's nice you have your own bathroom. That's one of my concerns. I have my own office but we have 2 unisex restrooms for everyone to use and that's not good.

I'm a chronic lurker but thought I'd dust myself off to post my counting up regarding the Nevada quakes.

I thought you guys would find the numbers interesting.

Used EMSC records for Nevada

[link to www.emsc-csem.org (secure)]

The first Nevada quake of 2020 was on the 3rd of January.

A total of 108 between then and the first recorded on the 15th May.

Average seemed to be 1-3 quakes per day

2 days in March with 5

1 day in March with 4

1 day in Feb with 5

1 day in Jan with 4

The first on the 15th May was a small 2.0 mag about 7 hours before the big one.

It's now getting close to 400 quakes since that first one on the 15th.

I think that's in about 34 hours? I might be a bit off with time differences and time zones though.

Thanks for all the updates posted here, it's fascinating.

And of course thanks for all the cats. No cat love in my life right now and some of the pics here make me want to run to the nearest rescue cattery and scoop them all up to bring home hf

That's a lot of math! lol

Thanks for sharing that. It's interesting to see there wasn't much notable lead up to the big one. Although EMSC usually only includes M2.0 and up, so it makes me wonder if we looked elsewhere and included Mag. 1.0 and up if there might've been any little microquake swarms in the area prior.

Here is the usgs aftershock forecast for the 6.5 in Nevada. [link to earthquake.usgs.gov (secure)]

It looks like the amount of quakes we're seeing is normal. The volume of M3+ quakes is a bit high, however, it's only been 24 hours since the quake. But the forecast says for the first week to expect 70-160 aftershocks at M3+. At the time of this forecast they say there had already been 114 M3 or higher EQs. I guess we'll see if that rate continues or if it dies down, but I know as of last night it already looked to be dying down a bit, while the 2.0-range quakes were increasing.

Hope you hang around, UK Chronic Lurker! hf
 Quoting: KickinIt

Adding to my previous post...

I did a little bit more digging on the aftershocks. I looked up aftershocks for the first 24 hours after the 6.5 Idaho quake for comparison with NV (time frames weren't quite exact, the NV #s include a bit more time overall than the ID #s). I did a search for 2.0+, as well as one for 3.0+. In both cases Nevada is way ahead in numbers. Double the M3+s, and nearly triple the total quakes (2.0>) for that first 24 hours.

It sure seems like a lot of EQs, especially compared to aftershocks of the ID quake. But I haven't read anything yet to indicate the aftershock activity for Nevada is considered abnormal. I'm assuming the higher overall volume in NV is due to more EQs at M3+. Plus there were 10 M4+ aftershocks yesterday and 3 thus far today. Those bigger quakes will lead to further smaller quakes.

There hasn't been one aftershock in the M5 range, which rather surprises me all things considered.
 Quoting: KickinIt

All great info! Thanks for doing the research and comparison!

From the uploader:

It is sinking, but the mechanism is a little different. This is thought to be something called ground oscillation, a less common type of liquefaction that you see sometimes with strong earthquakes turning the ground into mush.

Interesting article here.

Long-dormant volcano Mauna Kea has been quietly grumbling for decades

Hawaii’s long-dormant Mauna Kea volcano has been quietly and regularly rumbling for decades — but there’s no need for alarm.

The tiny earthquakes aren’t signs of the volcano’s unrest, and are more likely linked to gases bubbling from a pool of slowly cooling magma deep underground, researchers report in the May 15 Science.

Since at least 1999, the team reports, the ground deep beneath Mauna Kea has been shaking periodically, on timescales ranging from roughly every seven to 12 minutes. The source of the tiny quakes, each no more than about magnitude 1.5, is about 25 kilometers deep at the very base of Earth’s crust.

The long-lasting, highly periodic rhythm of Mauna Kea’s quakes is unusual. But small, deep, slow quakes are a familiar type of seismicity associated with volcanoes, says John Vidale, a seismologist at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, who was not involved in the study.

What causes these deep long-period quakes, or DLPs, remains a mystery.
