There was a major earthquake on the northern edge of the Bárðarbunga volcanic craters at around midnight last night.

The quake measured 4.2 on the Richter scale and is therefore the largest quake to have hit the famous volcano since it stopped erupting in February last year.

According to Bjarki Fries, a natural disasters specialist with the Icelandic met office, the earthquake emanated from 3.5 kilometers underground. Around 15 aftershocks have already been measured, the most powerful of which was a 3.5 quake at 01.00 this morning.

Met office earthquakes specialist Martin Hensch told RÚV that there is no evidence of lava movements or of any eruption activity connected to the earthquakes, but that the situation will be monitored carefully. There were two quakes in the same location on April 3, measuring 3.4 and 3 on the Richter scale.

The recent eruption at Bárðarbunga, often known as Holuhraun, lasted from late August 2014 to late February 2015, and despite not affecting aviation or physically threatening any human settlements, it caused dangerous levels of pollution around Iceland and produced more new lava than almost any other eruption in Iceland since the Vikings first arrived. Is that even possible? I'm asking seriously. I just assumed a series of quakes somewhere like that, including some mid-sized ones, and at a shallow depth, would always indicate volcanic activity.

Two days between coronal holes - a slight pause like at the top of a roller coaster.

Magnetic fields are romping about through the corona but most of them are missing earth.

Eyes on new sun spot and coronal holes in the event they defy the earth-facing quiet effect. We have, however, watched umbra after umbra crest into view during this cycle that have failed to produce a WOW event. This one has beta class magnetism and a fair chance of one good pop.

Solar wind - sector interaction over the last day left large fluctuations of density and particle speed within the stream and although global geomagnetic storms remained relatively mild [level one], there were very high isolated local events.

Quakes are expected to return after this brief hiatus. There will be an hour long podcast on their website today regarding brown dwarfs and varying movement of earth's magnetic poles versus movement of axial tilt and geographic poles.

I challenge anyone to out-nerd that.

Very cool, thanks. Iceland looks so beautiful. Would love to visit there. I had an Icelandic friend when I was in grad school and she was the shit (she has since moved back). I learned so much interesting stuff about Iceland from her. When her family came to visit, they brought fresh-caught cod straight from the ocean - her father and brother are fishermen. Put it on dry ice and brought it on the plane. Best cod of my life!
