Heads Up: Newly Found Comet Could Become A Naked-Eye Object Next Month - Comet C/2023 P1 Nishimura

A hyperbolic comet is falling into our solar system. Japanese amateur astronomer Hideo Nishimura discovered it just a few days ago in the constellation Gemini. Although it is relatively dim right now (magnitude +9), Comet Nishimura (C/2023 P1) could soon brighten more than 100-fold to become a naked-eye object in mid-September.

Closest Approach to Earth September 13, 2023.

Because this is Comet Nishimura's first trip to the inner solar system, it is extra unpredictable. On Sept. 18th, the comet will make its closest approach to the sun deep inside the orbit of Mercury. Anything could happen when intense sunlight touches the comet's pristine surface for the first time. Possibilities range from dramatic brightening to a disappointing fizzle. Standard models suggest a peak brightness of 3rd magnitude. This would make it visible to the naked eye from rural areas.

What a day today. Big wedding and bad weather. Bride and groom were adamant about having the ceremony outside in hopes that the weather would break for 30 minutes. I tried to tell them several different times that it was too risky and we should do it indoors. They didn't back down. :\

The very long aisle was practically a lake from all of the rain we had already gotten at that point.

Bride wanted us to go for it during a break in the rain so we gave her what she wanted. We redirected the guests so they didn't have to walk through huge puddles. We dried all of the benches at the ceremony site with towels and did the best we could do.

About 10 minutes into the ceremony it started POURING!

200 people were soaking wet. Myself included lol. Awful. We got a bunch of additional towels so the guests could dry off as much as possible after the ceremony. Everyone was in such great spirits and surprisingly no one seemed upset about being completely drenched. Their dresses, suits, hair soaked.

Sooo stressful, but the bride and groom were so thankful that the ceremony was outside, even with the rain lol. Crazy. Right after the ceremony the sun came out (of course) and a huge double rainbow appeared! The rest of the night went excellent, but omg that ceremony was something else!

This magnitude is quite unusual for Hungary. Only seven quakes with magnitude 4 or higher on EMSC since 2004. Largest was a 4.5 on 22 Aoril 2013.
