USGS WAS showing the 6.7 but they removed it... Quoting: CuriousSeeker Yes, there were two Quoting: WhiteAngel Wow, I decide to watch an earthquake movie & all hell breaks loose!! As much sleep as I got today (all together about 15 hours!!), a wave of tiredness has come over me again & I MIGHT try & sleep-but want to check some things out first. I hope there wasn't any damage with either of those last 2 AK quakes!! And WTF IS IT with USGS-WHY do they keep "hiding" quakes? I mean, what good does it do them?? There was one day recently-when I was watching closely-they initially reported 4 quakes-none of them "major", but still 1-4's, and minutes later there was no mention of them on the USGS site. You could find them on some other sites-but USGS just appeared to DELETE them?? I just don't understand WHY?? ************************************************************************************************* "Of all God's creatures there is only one who cannot be made the slave of the lash. Over the weekend, NASA's network of all-sky meteor cameras recorded more than a dozen alpha Capricornid fireballs over the USA, including this one above Mount Hopkins, Arizona (see image at link) This is an annual shower, which peaks every year between the 25th and 30th of July. Peak rates are typically no higher than 5 to 10 meteors per hour. [ link to www.spaceweather.com] |

Quoting: CuriousSeeker Same fault line The Alaska-Aleutian megathrust is a thrust fault that runs for 3,600 km from near Kamchatka in the west to the Gulf of Alaska in the east.[1] The Alaska-Aleutian megathust system forms the interface between the subducting Pacific Plate and the overriding North American Plate. Movement on this megathrust plate system has been responsible for several great historical earthquakes including the M 9.2 1964 Alaska earthquake, M 8.7 1965 Rat Islands earthquake and the M 8.6 1957 Andreanof Islands earthquake, each of them triggering large tsunamis. 64 quake epicenter was under Prince William Sound the ground shook for 5 minutesAt 5:36 p.m. Alaska Standard Time (3:36 a.m. March 28, 1964 UTC), a fault between the Pacific and North American plates ruptured near College Fjord in Prince William Sound. The epicenter of the earthquake was 12.4 mi (20 km) north of Prince William Sound, 78 miles (125 km) east of Anchorage and 40 miles (64 km) west of Valdez. The focus occurred at a depth of approximately 15.5 mi (25 km). Ocean floor shifts created large tsunamis (up to 220 feet (67 m) in height), which resulted in many of the deaths and much of the property damage.[5] Large rockslides were also caused, resulting in great property damage. Vertical displacement of up to 38 feet (11.5 m) occurred, affecting an area of 100,000 miles² (250,000 km²) within Alaska. Studies of ground motion have led to a peak ground acceleration estimate of 0.14 - 0.18 g.[6] The Alaska Earthquake was a subduction zone earthquake (megathrust earthquake), caused by an oceanic plate sinking under a continental plate. The fault responsible was the Aleutian Megathrust, a reverse fault caused by a compressional force. [ link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] |
