More than 80,000 feet above Earth's surface, the thin air tends to be very clear. Nevertheless, sometimes clouds do form in the stratosphere, and when they do, they are fantastically colorful. Øistein Hansen saw these polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) on Jan. 31st over Eidsvoll, Akershus, Norway: [ link to spaceweathergallery.com] These clouds are rare, yet they have been frequently sighted in the past few days. A "stratospheric cloud event" is underway with reports of the colorful puffs coming from places as far south as the UK. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for PSCs. The best time to see them is just before sunrise or after sunset. [ link to spaceweather.com] Quoting: Simple27 ~*Ride the Wave*~ |

Quoting: EnchantedWanderer A swarm is defined as 'spatial clustering of earthquakes at a time when the seismicity of the region is above average (Keilis-Borok etal. 1978). Since a swarm must meet criteria in both time and space we break the swarm identification algorithm into two propositions; one in the time domain, the other in the space domain. Both of these propositions must be true simultaneously for a swarm to exist. (thats from a study) And it can last for hours days or even months. But their magnitudes are usually smaller Ostria |

Quoting: EnchantedWanderer I don't think there is an actual number of eq's to determine a swarm. I checked a few sites and none had a specified number. Earthquake swarms are events where a local area experiences sequences of many earthquakes striking in a relatively short period of time. The length of time used to define the swarm itself varies, but the United States Geological Survey points out that an event may be of the order of days, weeks, or months.[1] They are differentiated from earthquakes succeeded by a series of aftershocks by the observation that no single earthquake in the sequence is obviously the main shock. Earthquake swarms are one of the events that typically precede eruptions of volcanoes. [ link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] ~*Ride the Wave*~ |
