New evacuations in Chile after major aftershock

IQUIQUE, Chile — Coastal residents of Chile’s far-north spent a second sleepless night outside their homes early Thursday after a major aftershock rattled an area hit a day earlier by a magnitude-8.2 earthquake that caused some damage and six deaths. No new major damage or casualties were reported.

After the 7.6-magnitude aftershock struck just before midnight Wednesday, Chile’s Emergency Office and navy issued a tsunami alert and ordered a precautionary evacuation of low-lying areas for the country’s whole 2,500-mile (4,000-kilometer) Pacific coastline.

A large landslide or series of underwater landslides in the Peru-Chile trench could cause a very severe tsunami even if triggered by a moderate earthquake. An undersea landslide doesn't displace water, although it could cause some pretty big underwater currents. It's when large landslides occur above the surface, and fall into the sea in a restricted area, that you get a big displacement of water, and resulting tsunami. This, from Wiki:

"The 1958 Lituya Bay megatsunami occurred on July 9, 1958, when a large, 8.3 magnitude earthquake on the Fairweather Fault triggered a landslide that caused 30 million cubic metres of rock and ice to fall into the narrow inlet of Lituya Bay, Alaska.[3] The sudden displacement of water resulted in a wave runup of 516 metres (1,720 feet) in height.[3] This is the highest recorded megatsunami and the largest known in modern times. The event forced a re-evaluation of large wave events, and recognition of impact and landslide events as a previously unknown cause of very large waves."
