Here is a video of kusatsu-shirane showing the vent today after the main event. It was on a flank cone not the main vent complex where there is a very acidic crater lake. There also was apparently some volcanic tremor and the fact the vent is still steaming maybe means there is a lot more heat, especially when there was nothing there before.lurk 24/01/2018 at 17:09 According to NHK world news, people are livid that no one warned them about it. The geologic authorities has been expecting activity from a different cone than the one that popped. mjf 24/01/2018 at 17:18 No activity in that particular spot in 3,000 years apparently. Plus there was absolutely zero warning this time, no anomalous seismic signals at all until the onset of tremor which was simultaneous with the explosion |

This represents a window of opportunity for science communication and disaster‐relief fundraising efforts to reach more people. However, how public interest varies for different earthquakes has not been quantified systematically on a global scale. We analyze how global search interest for the term “earthquake” on Google varies following destructive earthquakes from 2004 to 2016. We find that there is a spike in search interest after destructive earthquakes followed by an exponential temporal decay. [ link to pubs.geoscienceworld.org (secure)] ~*Ride the Wave*~ |

Didn't have to worry too much while in Baltimore, even though they've had one every now and then. Here, I may actually experience an earthquake for the first time..and I'm in no hurry to do it :) Some articles from last year..... ---- What is Arkansas' risk for a major earthquake?9/20/17 The Natural State has felt its fair share of earthquakes, but the Arkansas Geological Survey tells KATV they are keeping their eye on the New Madrid Seismic Zone that has the potential to threaten several states, including Arkansas. [ link to katv.com] ---- The strange reason this part of Arkansas gets so many earthquakes6/17/17 Ten earthquakes in northern Arkansas in the past five days?
Blame it on Bull Shoals Lake, swollen by spring floods.
The lake, which straddles the Missouri-Arkansas border, has risen 42 feet since the first of March, adding more than 6 trillion pounds of water weight to the lake basin.
That crushing weight triggered a 3.6-magnitude earthquake north of Harrison, Arkansas, on Sunday and at least nine more in the following days, according to David Johnston, earthquake geologist with the Arkansas Geological Survey.
"That's a whole lot of weight — 6 trillion pounds of weight added to the local geologic column," Johnston said Friday. "That much weight can cause a tremendous amount of stress." *** "It's the same process when you let the water out of the lake," he said. "When you lower the lake, you can then relax that pressure and cause small earthquakes again." [ link to www.news-leader.com] ---- Since that time, Bull Shoals lake as dropped significantly again, due to a an ongoing drought. The Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for maintaining lake levels, via the Bull Shoals dam. |

i thought i would add a bit of humour to the thread, although some might not find it funny. i would think that many of you aware that all of the gov earthquake sites have been downgrading, failing to report and even deleting earthquakes weeks after the event assuming the sheep will not notice. For this post i will focus on an ongoing earthquake swarm in North Eastern New South Wales. Australia. This swarm started approximately 4 days ago. People in the region where this swarm is still ongoing are making reports but the aussie gov site is failing to report them on their list. Here is where the humour commences. EarthquakesGA - @EarthquakesGA 24h24 hours ago We continue to receive additional felt reports from Scott's Heads on earthquakes occurring on 23/01. These are too small and cannot be located accurately by our instruments. These events belong to the swarm of earthquakes felt along the NSW north coast since Saturday. Can you believe this? People can physically feel these earthquakes but their instruments are unable to pick them up. Its gets better. This earthquake,, M4.2 Near Nambucca Heads, NSW. (Reported felt). Sydney time: 24 January 13:28 UTC time: 24 January 02:28 was not placed on the [ link to www.emsc-csem, (secure)] even though they have placed about 20 of the 50 in the last 4 days. They failed to report the largest quake of a swarm where earthquakes are as rare as hen's teeth. The humour continues, "We’ve been receiving #earthquake felt reports from Port Macquarie to Coffs Harbour, concentrated near Southwest Rocks to Nambucca Heads. It's not unusual to get a swarm of earthquakes when stresses exceed the strength of the rock. Felt one?" Felt one???? Don't bother reporting it because we have no intention of placing on our list, we just ask for the humour. The obvious question becomes,,why have all the gov sites been downgrading, refusing to report and strait out deleting Earthquakes over the last few years??? The downgrades from 8"s to 7 . somethings is really obvious. The answer,, If they showed the real figures of the increases in earthquakes over the last few years you would be shitting your pants. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76048926 Wow, great info and thanks for sharing it here. It's safe to say USGS isn't the only one hiding and downgrading quakes. Seems to be rampant across the board. Wishing you safety, Aussie AC! |

There were aftershocks after the 7.2 preceding the 9.1. Just because there are aftershocks doesn't mean it's doom off.

Geosciences Australia reported the earthquake hit at 13.28pm. The NSW Incidents says there is no tsunami warning current for the Coffs Coast. A BIGGER earthquake could hit the Coffs Coast after 15 shook Dorrigo and Bellingen in the past few days. Geoscience Australia seismologist Hugh Glanville said earthquakes in this region were rare. "It's pretty unusual," Mr Glanville said. "We haven't had a swarm (of earthquakes) in that area for a long time." But after the swarm of quakes ranging from a 2-3 magnitude shook up the local area, he could not rule out a larger one. "There is always the chance of a bigger earthquake," he said.
