Quick rambling about 8+ quakes...
USGS anss catalog finds 91 8+ during 1900-2017. Whiteangel has already provided in excellent detail analysis in which months 8+ have occurred.
The longest time without 8+ was during 1976-1985 when there were no such quakes in 9 years and two months. For our predictions sake, hopefully it does not take so long this time.
The most 8+ in a year is a tie between 1906 and 2007 with 4.
The average time between 8+ is 470days, or 1 year, 3months and 15 days. We are now at 546 days, or 1 year, 5months and 27 days.
Conclusion: we are overdue and have a nice day!

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73738418 goodmorning remember the many downgraded to 7.9 Quoting: .Psychedelic. That is why we should count 7.8 & 7.9 as 8.0 but do make a note of them in their downgraded number. I did this when I did my calculations. I need to do it again as it is two years old now. Quoting: WhiteAngel Well I would not count them as 8+ if multiple agencies with professional seismologist determine a quake at 7.8 or 7.9. It will give a false sense of security if we count 4 8+ in the year 2016 alone... 2016 was in no way the most active quake year since 2007. Again, just an opinion. -Finland Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73451036 Thus the reason I count them in my info but always put their number down as 7.8 even though I was only counting 8+ for the data. We have seen many large quakes downgraded to the point we all know it wasn't that. All other agencies but USGS said it was larger. That is what we are talking about actually. The false security USGS tries to sell to the sheeple. |

Quoting: WhiteAngel I respect your opinion on this but would like to remind everyone that many times usgs and others have also upgraded magnitudes. The most striking example is the Japan 7.9 which was upgraded to a 9.0. GFZ on the other hand has the four latest major quakes at 7.8, 7.8, 7.7 and 7.8. So in fact, usgs has them larger than GFZ (evil germans) I do agree when we are talking about smaller quakes and USA quakes. They do downgrade heavily there. -Finland |

It is VERY unusual to see 11 5+ within the same day all in different places. So again, this might be the last hint something major is about to go down. Did not find a similar occurrence in the last 2 years.. usually when over 10 5+ happen, there is a cause. For example a 6.8 with aftershocks.
There was nothing which should have resulted in so many 5+ Heads up
