Whoa! Texas Biological Hazard in USA on Saturday, 27 September, 2014 at 04:24 (04:24 AM) UTC. Description A Possum Kingdom woman is in critical condition after she and her husband were both attacked by what are believed to be Africanized honeybees. The attack happened last week as the couple was cleaning up junk behind the Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce. Stanley Whitehead says paramedics pulled more than 300 stingers from his body and more than 200 from his wife. He says he hopes more people learn just how dangerous the bees can be. Whitehead says as he began to move a piece of Styrofoam, the bees in a hive began stinging him faster than he could even react. His wife ran toward him with a pillowcase, tried to fight them off and was attacked herself. "I was fighting 'em off of her, she was fighting them off of me and it just got so overwhelming that, twice, I reached up and reached down and just pulled wads of bees off me and throwed 'em on the ground and reached up, and I had to do that to be able to see her," said Whitehead. "They were that thick." Another man who was with them ran to call 911. Firefighters arrived and were stung as they pulled the couple into the ambulance. "They saved our lives," said Whitehead. "They got us in the ambulance, closed it up, rolled the windows up. Once the ones that were in there stung us, they died." Whitehead says the pain from the attack was excruciating. "Think about falling out of a car and sliding down the pavement and the whole side of your body just burning like hell," said Whitehead. Whitehead was released from the hospital Saturday, but his wife, Nancy, is still in critical condition after a week in the hospital. She's allergic to bee stings. "She's my angel," he said. "I mean, she's my whole world. If it hadn't been for her, I wouldn't be where I'm at now with a loving son, a good home. I mean, in '74 when I married her, I married the only angel walking." The bees are being tested o officially determine whether they are Africanized killer bees, but the bee keeper who cleaned up the hive believes they were, based on how aggressively they attacked. Description There are three confirmed cases of MRSA in Ligonier Valley School District. Superintendent Chris Oldham said officials learned on Friday that a student at the high school had contracted the staph infection typically spread through skin-to-skin contact or direct contact with infected surfaces. The first case was confirmed on Sept. 18 in a middle school student, Oldham said. Shortly afterward, officials learned another middle school student had contracted MRSA. “Those students were treated and cleared by their doctors, so they've been back at school,” she said. Antibiotics are used to treat the infection, and a doctor's clearance is required before a student can return to school, Oldham said. The school periodically disinfects chairs and desktops, but after a case of MRSA is confirmed, a bleach solution is used on areas the student frequents, Oldham said. District buses are going to be disinfected, she said. The three infected students were on different athletic teams, Oldham said. When an athlete is infected, the district advises the team to take precautions. “We'll have the students take all of their equipment home, wash it in hot water, disinfect everything,” she said. Oldham said the district has not drawn a connection among the three cases, adding that the students did not ride the same buses. The district notified parents in a Sept. 18 letter to take precautions. “Just like any infection, the best thing to do is keep your hands clean, washed and disinfected,” Oldham said. “If they have a wound that doesn't seem to be healing, they should get it checked out.” Another letter was going to be sent to district parents and students on Friday with information regarding the infection. Information will be posted on the district's website, Oldham said. There are 373 students enrolled at the middle school and 531 students at the high school. Oldham said communicable diseases such as MRSA are something schools experience since they have “folks in close quarters.” “Schools have to be aware of what they need to do to address the issues once they're confirmed,” Oldham said. School closures are usually not necessary when a student contracts MRSA, according to the state Department of Health. [ link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |
